When backpack hunting, a headlamp may be used for simple task lighting around camp, but it may also be a critical source of safety as you navigate difficult off-trail terrain with a heavy pack on a nighttime packout.
A backpack hunter’s headlamp needs to balance weight, performance, and efficiency.
The headlamp should provide lower-lumen flood lighting for close-range work, as well as high-intensity focused light for wayfinding. The headlamp should have a lockout feature to prevent accidental battery discharge.
Total light output, runtime or battery efficiency, and the weight of the headlamp, are variables that are at odds with one another, so it is important to understand the trade-offs that exist in those areas and then evaluate how to balance what you need from a headlamp.
